GAFCHROMIC
GAFCHROMIC radiochromic dosimetry films are self-developing
film media that have been developed for the measurement of absorbed
dose and the mapping of radiation fields associated with external
beam radiotherapy and brachytherapy. The films developed a distinctive
and characteristic color upon exposure to ionizing radiation and become
progressively darker in proportion to absorbed dose. These media can
be handled in normal room light, thereby eliminating the cost of darkroom
space. Furthermore, since they are self-developing, the costs and
inconvenience of post-exposure development are eliminated and there
are no hazardous chemicals or waste to dispose of.
Individual GAFCHROMIC radiochromic dosimetry film types
are available optimized for high or low energy photons as well as
particle radiation. The films are tissue equivalent, light and flexible
and may be cut to any shape or size desired. These properties make
them ideal for incorporation into anthropomorphic phantoms and the
mapping of 2-D and 3-D treatment fields. The construction of GAFCHROMIC
radiochromic dosimetry film media even permits them to be immersed
in water for short periods of time. GAFCHROMIC radiochromic dosimetry
films have responses that are not only dose-rate independent, but
they do not exhibit fractionation effects. Their response is also
energy-independent down to about 0.2MeV.
The colour change in GAFCHROMIC dosimetry films may
be measured with any densitometer; scanner or spectrophotometer, providing
the measured response is at red-light wavelength and in the range
of the peak absorbance of the blue dye, ie. close to 670nm.
